When we began programming sessions for #IID21, we scoured the planet looking for edge-thinkers and doers who could spark the imagination and help us turn ideas into concrete actions. Little did we know that this journey would take us even further: to space.

That’s where we bumped into Nahum. Ten years ago Nahum founded the KOSMICA Institute, a space organisation about the critical, cultural and poetic aspects of space exploration activities and their impact on Earth. He’s also the first artist to launch an interactive artwork into outer space. But why?

For Nahum, the logistics of space travel opens up a much deeper set of questions about who we are, and who we want to become. In a recent interview with Emerge Magazine, Nahum said: “Space agencies are employing the latest technologies and science, but their cultural approach relies on frameworks that are 500 years old.”

In this video, created by Nahum for Istanbul Innovation Days, he introduces some of his ideas, artwork and music:

You can see and hear more from Nahum in « Questioning Identity and the Past » – Session 1 « Paradigm Lock-ins : Examining how language, as a career of culture and information, generates biases and barriers or unlocks our abilities to explore alternative development paths » taking place at 09:15 CET on the 24th of March 2021, part of the Main Event of Istanbul Innovation Days.
